Peels vs Dermaplaning

I am often asked, peels or dermaplaning – which is better? Both are amazing but work in different ways.

The difference between dermaplaning and chemical peels mainly concerns the depths that each process can reach. 

  • Dermaplaning removes the top layer of your skin, increasing collagen and elastin production, and is excellent for sun damage, age spots, acne, sensitive skin, peach fuzz, fine lines, and wrinkles. At the same time, chemical peels are great for deeper sun damage, and age spots, tougher skin, deeper wrinkles, and scarring.

Dermaplaning is non-invasive, involving a surgical blade designed for dermaplaning gently scraped over the skin of your face to remove dead skin and even out rough or dry spots. Dermaplaning also increases collagen and elastin production in the skin, promoting a firmer, even skin tone. It is generally painless and can be performed often, up to once per month. In addition to removing the rougher outer part of the dermis, it also helps to remove unwanted facial hair (also known as “peach fuzz”) without the pain that often comes with tweezing and waxing. When this process is done correctly, your skin will appear smoother and younger. The treatment will take about an hour and the effects can last up to a month or more. It is recommended for your face only. The benefits of Dermaplane are instant glow, better makeup application, and the ability of your products to be more effective.

A Peel is a chemical exfoliation process that penetrates deeper into the skin so that the top layers will begin to shed, and both stimulates collagen and increases cellular turnover. This process begins with a chemical peeling agent applied to the surface of your face. The solution is left on for a few minutes and then removed or neutralized. You will feel tingling to a mild burning sensation and your esthetician can adjust the depth to which your peel goes: mild, medium, or deep. The peel may leave the skin sensitive and red. You may also choose to do a series of chemical peels, 1 week or 1 month apart to reach your desired results. A series of 3 treatments is typical to achieve maximum results. Your skin may flake or look dry for a couple of days, and then you will see new and healthier-looking skin begin to show.

This process is best for those who are experiencing hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, and skin texture issues.

Peels Questions

What happens during a chemical peel?

Before getting a chemical peel, some clients need to follow a pre-peel skin care plan for 2 to 4 weeks. This plan can improve results and reduce potential side effects. Your esthetician will tell you whether this is necessary.

On the day of your peel, you will first be prepped for the treatment. This includes cleansing your skin thoroughly. 

After you are prepped, your esthetician will apply the peel quickly and evenly. Your esthetician will watch your skin carefully to remove the peel at just the right time. 

After the peel comes off, your skin will be treated as needed. Clients who get a medium peel may need cool compresses followed by a lotion or cream to soothe their skin.

What must I do after getting a chemical peel?

All peels that an esthetician performs require some at-home care. 

What to expect after a chemical peel

    • Healing time: 1 to 7 days. Skin will be red. After the redness disappears, scaling may develop, which lasts 3 to 7 days. 

    • At-home care: Lotion or cream applied until the skin heals, followed by daily use of sunscreen.

    • When to wear makeup: Usually immediately after the peel, but sometimes the next day. 

    • Follow-up visit: No. However, 3 to 5 peels may be necessary to give you the desired results. These peels may be repeated every 2 to 5 weeks.

  • To help clients get the best results, estheticians also share these tips:

  • Use the moisturizer as directed to keep your skin moist and supple. If your skin dries and cracks, it can scar.

  • If your skin burns, itches, or swells, contact your dermatologist. Rubbing or scratching skin treated with a chemical peel can cause an infection.  

  • Do not use a tanning bed or other type of indoor tanning. Your skin will not heal properly.

  • After your skin heals, apply sunscreen every day. This will help you maintain results.

When will I see the results?

Once your skin heals, you will see the results. Healing time is typically 1 day for a mild or medium peel. To get the maximum results you may need to have 3 to 5 peels. 

How long will the results last?

Most results are not permanent because our skin continues to age. If you have lots of sun-damaged skin or precancerous skin growths called AKs, you will likely continue to see new spots and growths on your skin. 

What are the possible side effects?

In the hands of an esthetician who has experience with chemical peels, side effects tend to be mild. Some clients develop:

  • Persistent redness that may last for months.

  • Temporary darkening of the skin. 

  • Lighter skin color (medium and deep peels).

If serious side effects occur, it is often because the client did not follow the esthetician’s instructions. Your risk for developing an infection or scarring increases dramatically if you: 

  • Fail to protect your skin from the sun. 

  • Fail to care for your wound as instructed.

  • Scratch the treated skin or pick off a scab.

  • Apply makeup before your skin heals.

  • Don’t heed your esthetician’s advice and use a tanning bed or other type of indoor tanning.

When is it safe to have another chemical peel?

To maintain results, you can repeat mild and medium chemical peels. Your esthetician can tell you how often you can have a repeat treatment. 

Dermaplaning Questions

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive technique in which a  licensed esthetician will scrape off vellus hair (also known as “peach fuzz”) and a top layer of dead skin cells off the epidermis, the top layer of the skin.

A surgical-grade scalpel is used, not a razor. Dermaplaning also serves as a manual exfoliant,

When done by a professional, dermaplaning can lead to smoother, brighter skin, and no peach fuzz.

As a bonus, by scraping off built-up hair and dead skin, it allows for greater penetration of creams, serums and the other skincare treatments that may be in your routine. It’s beneficial for “flawless makeup application,” since it will lay closer to the skin after the procedure. 

How often should I have a Dermaplaning treatement?

Typical intervals for treatment sessions are every 3 to 4 weeks.

What are the risks?

Contrary to the notions that shaved hair grows back thicker or longer, it doesn’t. “(Vellus) hairs don’t grow back thick or noticeably,” For the most part, it’s a relatively non-irritating and painless procedure.

But for anyone with a skin condition — sensitive skin, skin cancer, eczema, or severe acne — the benefits aren’t worth the risks.

And, as with every skincare procedure, it may not be effective for every individual. Your esthetician may advise another procedure instead, including chemical peels.
